Set in medieval Scotland and partly based on a true historical account, Macbeth charts the bloody rise to power and tragic downfall of the warrior, Macbeth. At the start of the play, three witches appear to Macbeth and his comrade Banquo and tell them Macbeth will become king, and the descendants of Banquo will also reign. Macbeth is overcome by ambition and greed after hearing the prophesy. As it begins to come true, Macbeth plots to kill the reigning king, setting in motion a series of events that leads to madness and tragedy.
