Karen Tongson, an associate professor of Gender Studies at the University of Southern California, and Wynter Mitchell, a digital marketing and content strategies in Los Angeles will visit the University to dish about the past and record a live show of their new podcast, Waiting to X-Hale. Wynter and Karen were two of four hosts of the popular podcast Pop Rocket; after the two white co-hosts decided to leave for other projects, their sponsor, Maximum Fun, decided that two women of color couldn’t maintain Pop Rocket on their own, and cancelled the podcast (right after they hosted a membership drive for the program). Pop Rocket’s loyal audience was outraged, and Wynter and Karen started their own podcast on Patreon. While in Oxford, they will record an episode of their podcast with award-winning writer Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy, and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Alysia Steele, author of Delta Jewels: In Search of My Grandmother’s Wisdom. Then they will join a conversation with Isom Director Jaime Harker in which, we hope, they will spill the tea, talk about Pop Rocket’s demise, and discuss podcasts, digital media, and the role of women of color in podcasting’s future.
