In this free lecture and demonstration, University of Memphis pianist and professor Dr. Artina McCain explores the impact of William Grant Still's work on 20th century black composers.  McCain will focus on Still's piano work, and will demonstrate through performance and recordings the effect his work had on black composers after him.

William Grant Still is a Mississippi native whose contributions to American music and the Euro-American classical music cannon are well-established.  His use of Southern idioms and culture in his work earned him the title, Dean of African American Composers."

Dr. McCain's lecture is free and open to all:  Nutt Auditorium at 1:00 pm.  She will also perform in the concert Tuesday evening at 7:30 in Nutt, which celebrates the instrumental work of William Grant Still as part of the University's Black History Month activities.  The evening concert is also free.
