Laughter and/as Social Justice
Cheech & Chong, Myriam Gurba, Nathanael West, Larry David, James Baldwin, Richard Pryor, and Cultural Metamorphosis through Mexican American (Latinx), Jewish American, and African American Comedy
Bill Nericcio’s “Laughter and/as Social Justice” treats audiences to a fast-moving, and media-drenched (images, streaming video clips, etc.) review of some of the most dynamic, vexing, and evocative comedy from the 20th and 21st centuries. Why is it in laughter that the soul of the human expresses itself most clearly? What is it about comedy that gets to the DNA, to the subterranean unconscious, of Americans today? The lecture focuses on innovative (sometime outrageous) comedic performances that intervene on the scene of American Race and Culture.
