UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

"Digital Humanities and Biographical Research on Slavery"

Professor Paul E. Lovejoy will discuss new directions in research on slavery and Global Africa during the Age of Revolution. The focus on testimonies of enslavement and freedom has resulted in the development of open source, relational databases that detail what is known about the lives of more than 100,000 individuals who were born in Africa. What can be called a "biographical turn" has prompted a new assessment of ethnicity, identity and social change in the study of Global Africa.

Professor Paul E. Lovejoy, is Distinguished Research Professor, Department of History, York University, and once held the title of "Canada Research Chair in African Diaspora History." He has helped to establish several research institutes in many countries, including a Wilberfouce Institute at the University of Hull (UK), and he is currently a member of the International Scientific Committee, UNESCO General History of Africa. He is also the auther or numerous books including Jihad in West Africa during the Age of Revolutions.
