“Freedom Justifies Freedom: Humanity and the Ground of the Innate Right in Kant”
“In recent work on Kant’s political philosophy, commentators suggest that Kant grounds the innate right to external freedom in our possession of humanity construed as the capacity to set ends (Hodgson 2010, Allais 2016, Guyer 2016). In this paper, I argue that this interpretive approach is mistaken, and propose an alternative interpretation of humanity as the ground of the innate right. For Kant, it is our metaphysical freedom under moral laws of pure practical reason, or moral personality, that grounds our possession of the innate right to external freedom.”
The format of this event will be a workshop of Robert English’s paper. Requests for an advance copy of the paper can be directed to Dr. Donovan Wishon (dwishon@olemiss.edu).
