Billy Hart and the Academy is the product of master jazz drummer Billy Hart’s ongoing effort to share his wealth of experience with the next generation of musicians while also pushing his own concepts and compositions forward onto fresh musical horizons. The current iteration of the Billy Hart Academy features three recent graduates of Oberlin Conservatory, Alex Cummings (saxophones), Jack Laskey (piano), and Dan Pappalardo (bass). Billy, a longtime professor at Oberlin Conservatory, began collaborating with Jack and Dan during their time as students. More Recently, The Academy has been seen performing around New York City and the region.

Billy Hart got his start at age 17 playing weekend gigs at a spot called Abart’s in Washington, D.C. His first steady gigs of note were with Shirley Horn and Buck Hill. He has toured with Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery, Eddie Harris, and Pharoah Sanders, and recorded with McCoy Tyner, Joe Zawinul, and Wayne Shorter.

Hart has been a regular with many bands and leaders: Herbie Hancock’s Sextet Gerry Mulligan, Billy Harper, Clark Terry, the New York Jazz Quartet, the Jazztet, Mingus Dynasty, and most extensively with Quest (with David Liebman, Ritchie Beirach, and Ron McClure). Hart was also a member of the Charles Lloyd, Joe Lovano, and Tom Harrell groups, and the Three Tenors (Liebman, Lovano, and Michael Brecker).

Billy Hart and the Academy is Billy Hart, Drums, Alex Cummings, Saxophone, Jack Laskey, Piano and Dan Pappalardo, Bass with David Weiss, Trumpet
