SOJOURNER TRUTH: A Cantata, composed and conducted by Dr. Stanley Friedman, will be performed this Sunday at 2:00 pm. Free admission, and all are welcome.
The piece was commissioned by Nicholls State University in Louisiana, and will be performed by the Sojourner Truth Ensemble of Nicholls State and noted soprano, Valerie Francis. Following the performance, which will last around 40 minutes, Dr. Friedman and the musicians will speak about the piece and about Sojourner Truth.
The Cantata is based on Truth's words, and its five movements highlight scenes in Sojourner's life: (1) why she changed her name from Isabella to Sojourner; (2) how she inspired black soldiers to fight for freedom; (3) how she changed hearts and minds with her famous "Ain't I a Woman" speech; (4) how she faced her own death with faith and courage; (5) how her story continues to inform and inspire to this day.
Written in a classical cantata structure favored by JS Bach, the music is nevertheless modern, reflecting the timeless quality and emotional resonance of Sojourner Truth's life and words.
Eligible for Music 100 and 103 credit. Admission is free.
