We are offering a viewing of the sky with out telescopes in Kennon Observatory on August 15, Sunday night, 8:00-10:00 pm.

We’ll be looking at the Moon. The half-Moon is always great!

Early arrivals may be able to catch Venus, which sets right after 8 pm. However, Venus is still far away and looks little in the telescope at this time.

Saturn is up 8 but low over the horizon. By 10 pm it rises high enough (30º altitude) to be a great view.

Jupiter will show around 9 but will be decently observable only at 10 pm.

In the meantime, we might look at some colorful double stars (Albireo) and perhaps at some open cluster (M11, the wild Duck) if the usual summer haze recedes a bit.

The event is free, families are welcome. We ask visitors to have masks handy, and put them on when indoors or when many people congregate in a small area.

Viewing is not possible when the sky is cloudy - if that happens we’ll have to cancel and ask everyone to come back in exact 4 weeks for another try.
