It is common for argumentation theorists to claim that their subject has little to do with our everyday understanding of arguing. In this paper, we develop an account of everyday arguing in which attitudinal difference plays a central role. In future work, we shall show how extant theories of argumentation are related to our everyday understanding of arguing. The discussion in the present paper takes in the following topics: (1) considerations about attitudes and difference in attitudes; (2) considerations about assertion and difference in attitudes; (3) considerations about arguments and difference in attitudes; (4) considerations about engagement in argumentation and difference in attitudes; and (5) considerations about argument and emotion. We conclude with a brief pointer to our unified classification of theories of argumentation.
