The chamber music series Sonic Explorations presents Concert 7 “Masters and Innovators” featuring compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven, Claude Debussy, and living American composer, Craig Hella Johnson. Performers include UM faculty members Jos Milton, Michael Rowlett, Adam Estes, Vincent Morreale, Selim Giray, Armee Hong, Greg Johnson, David Carlisle, Yoojung Kim, Adrienne Park, and Ruth Valente Burgess, principal cellist of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.
Programmed works includes Beethoven’s heartfelt song cycle An die ferne Geliebte (To the Distant Beloved), 12 Variations on a Theme from Handel's Judas Maccabaeus performed on baritone saxophone and piano, and an important work within the horn repertoire, the Sonata for Horn and Piano in F Major, op. 17. Two compositions by Debussy include the virtuostic duo Première Rhapsodie for Clarinet and Piano and his vibrant Sonata for Cello and Piano. The program culminates in a performance of the song “In Need of Breath” from Craig Hella Johnsons’ fusion oratorio Considering Matthew Shepard for tenor, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, bass, marimba, and piano.
